В роли тестовых источников мы использовали два смартфона (обычный Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 и «музыкальный» LG V10, оснащённый продвинутым ЦАПом и усилителем для наушников на специализированной микросхеме) и Hi-Fi плеер Cowon Plenue M.

Музыкальная программа состояла из записей самых разных жанров (рок, джаз, электроника, симфоническая классика), но исключительно в форматах lossless (FLAC) и в разных разрешениях от стандартного (16 бит/44,1 кГц) до высокого (24 бита/192 кГц). По традиции мы добавили в эту коллекцию кое-что свежее: последний диск группы Unkle «The Road Part 1», а также дебютный альбом молодой соул-блюзовой команды Southern Avenue из Мемфиса, бодро записанный в 24 бита/96 кГц.

Начали прослушивание на «обычном» смартфоне Galaxy S3. Его усилительных возможностей оказалось более чем достаточно: обе модели раскачивались при уровне громкости порядка 40–45%. Частотка была ровной, избытка не ощущалось ни в нижней, ни в верхней части диапазона. Тем не менее, разница между LS50 и LS70 была очень заметна, и проявлялась она в чуть более грубых высоких частотах у младшей модели — старшая играла мягче, чище и гармоничнее.

С лихвой хватало громкости и с LG V10 — устройство воспринимало наушники, как «обычные» (то есть низкоомные) и потому уменьшало уровень в аудиомикшере. Тем не менее, оптимальная громкость достигалась в том же районе 40–45%. Если отключить Hi-Fi ЦАП, становилось очень похоже на Galaxy S3 — появлялся «песочек» на верхах и одновременно снижалось разрешение, исчезали мелкие подробности.

В целом обеим моделям свойственен характерный ровный и нейтральный звук студийных наушников Audio-Technica. Они ничего не приукрашивают и почти ничего не добавляют от себя (на полную непредвзятость способны только более дорогие профессиональные наушники, да и то не все). И не проявляют каких-либо жанровых предпочтений, по крайней мере, явных.

Немного смягчённый верх частотного диапазона (в большей степени это касается ATH-LS70) позволяет слушать наушники долго и не уставая. Такой саунд больше понравится тем, кто предпочитает воспринимать музыку цельно, в совокупности всех составляющих её элементов. И меньше — любителям получать максимум информации, даже той, что не должна была быть записана.

But How Do They Sound?

With sensitivity and impedance figures quoted as 99dB and 470Ω respectively, the R70xs can be driven from a low–power source such as a USB DAC or laptop headphone output, but anyone who wants to use them at more than moderate volume will need something with a bit more welly. As you’d expect of open–back ‘phones, there is a fair bit of leakage, but they are far from being the worst offenders in this area.

Apart from the cheapest M20xs, the closed–back ’phones in Audio–Technica’s M–series share a characteristic tonality which is distinguished by a prominent low bass and a strong treble lift. This somewhat hyped sound has its pluses and minuses: it can make listening more exciting and involving, and makes it easy to focus on mix details that can get overlooked on speakers, yet at the same time can mask problems in the mid-range and exaggerate issues such as sibilance and high–frequency noise.

The R70xs also have a character that might be described as ‘scooped’, but it’s obviously different from that of the M–series ‘phones. There’s still a definite high–frequency lift, but on most material it manifests itself much more subtly as a soft, airy, understated presence rather than a brash treble boost. The bass is excellent: deep, clear and even, and slightly forward without ever sounding unbalanced or overpowering. The mid–range, meanwhile, seems pure and uncoloured, albeit slightly recessed and soft. A track that I often use as a reference when mixing is ‘Borstal Boys’ by the Faces; an object lesson in how to cram as much energy and rock & roll attitude as possible into the mid–range, it still sounds great on the R70xs, but it’s a more polite listening experience than you’d get on a neutral or mid–heavy system.

Quite a few other high–end open–backed ‘phones have similar just–on–the–scooped–side–of–neutral frequency responses: if not quite a smile curve, then a definite glint–in–the–eye curve. I tend to associate this sort of sound with AKG’s open–back models, for example, and like the K712s and their siblings, the R70xs also present an expansive stereo panorama which occasionally seemed to me to make centre–panned sources appear a little low in the mix. In both cases, though, any deviations from neutrality are small enough that your ears quickly compensate. All in all, these are fine mixing headphones which must be auditioned if you’re in the market for a serious pair of open–backed cans.

Most of the major headphone manufacturers offer good open–back models in the same price bracket, including AKG with the K712s, Shure with the SRH1840s, Beyer with their DT880s and Sennheiser with the HD650s.

Along with the ATH R70xs, Audio–Technica also sent a pair of their new flagship closed–back ‘phones, the ATH M70xs. These are distinguished visually from the other headphones in the M series by having the forked part of the frame painted silver rather than black. Like the ATH M50xs, their earcups are free to rotate both laterally and vertically, but the headband on the M70xs is much narrower and is padded only in the centre, and although they are by no means uncomfortable, I found the M50xs to have the edge in this department. The flip side of this is that the M70xs appear to offer better isolation.

The M70xs are, say Audio–Technica, “tuned for extremely accurate reproduction”, which begs the question as to why they sound really quite different from the R70xs! In practice, comparing the two demonstrates exactly why most people advocate open–back designs for mixing. It’s quickly apparent that the R70xs offer the much more natural and neutral perspective on a mix; by comparison, not only do the M70xs have the inevitable boxy quality that attends all closed–back designs, but they exemplify the ‘scooped’ Audio–Technica family sound. I was able to compare them directly to a pair of M50xs; the top end on the M70xs is slightly different in character but similarly bright, and arguably more prone to harshness (though this might of course change as they get burned in). I think that they should probably be considered alternatives to the M50xs with slightly different strengths, rather than as being their superiors in every respect.

Дужка выполнена из кожи. Традиционно для изделий мониторного типа, чаши наушников отличаются большими размерами. Благодаря этому среднестатистическое ухо полностью помещается под амбушюры без какого-либо дискомфорта.

Посадка наушников выполнена на высоком уровне – носишь наушники и просто кайфуешь. На голове сидят плотно, но не сдавливают её. При этом материалы изготовления не заставляют голову потеть.

Что касается амбушюр, то они также выполнены из кожи. Мембраны покрыты особым материалом Diamond-like Carbon.

Как нам известно, наполнение амбушюра влияет на его отражающие свойства. Чем плотнее и тверже он получится, тем больший контроль над басом удастся получить. В этой модели есть некий баланс – они и жесткие, и мягкие одновременно. Из-за этого мы не слышим долбежки в ушах, да это и хорошо.

Звуковые катушки намотаны проводом из бескислородной меди OFC-7N, что привело к лучшей проводимости, а в следствии, к повышению качества звучания, о котором мы поговорим немного позже.

Кроме того, чаши вращаются в двух направлениях, благодаря чему их реально удобно использовать людям с разным анатомическим строением головы. Подстраиваются под каждого за секунду.

Да и, в случае чего, всегда можно повесить на шею, развернув от себя. Так окружающие тоже смогут оценить вашу музыку, ибо играют они реально громко.

Отдельно отмечу удобство подключения наушников к смартфону или плееру. 3,5-мм кабель снимается, а значить в случае поломки покупать новые наушники не придется. Достаточно просто заменить провод.

Sound

Here we go with the sound portion of this review. Consumer earbuds and headphones aren’t the greatest for use in a live music situation. The reason is, as a musician, we want to hear the raw sound of the instruments and the mix. Many consumer headphones are tuned in certain ways to enhance the listened-to music in a way the engineers want to hear it. IEMs used for live music and for recording are generally engineered to give you a flat and raw sound profile.

This is what I was looking for in the Audio-Technica ATH-E70 IEMs, and it’s exactly what I got. Everything is balanced, pure, and raw without adding any sort of tuning. This gives me the clearest sound of what the band sounds like and what my guitar sounds like. The clarity of the ATH-E70’s is amazing, like nothing I’ve used for live playing ever.

All of the consumer headphones I used in the past would muddy up the mix and it was hard to get the feel and mood of the music we were playing. Consumer headphones are used to listen to music that is already mixed and mastered and they are tuned for that. They are not tuned for listening to live, unedited and real-time mixes like playing live. This is why clarity and raw accuracy is important in on-stage IEMs.

The Audio-Technica ATH-E70 IEMs did an excellent job of providing the clarity and accuracy I was looking for. They separated the vocals really well and kept the mids, highs, and lows where they needed to be. The bass didn’t overwhelm the mix and the kick on the drums didn’t overpower the rest of the instruments.

Overall, the Audio-Technica ATH-E70 IEMs are the best in-ear monitors I’ve used on-stage since I’ve been using IEMs. These provided exactly what is needed for live performance, clarity, separation, and raw sound.

Overall, they are comfortable but every so often I did have some fatigue after a long run with them.

Несмотря на то, что в комплект входит кабель с гарнитурой, я бы точно не стал использовать данную модель с планшетами и смартфонами, да и прослушивание на улице не сильно подходит для них. Это весьма серьезная модель для домашнего применения, которая вполне достойна не самого бюджетного «ЦАПоуся» либо плеера топового сегмента. Одним из применений данных наушников мне видится использование их в качестве «дополнения» к каким-то более темным наушникам в домашнем сетапе для прослушивания серьезных жанров.

По стилям музыки в первую очередь я бы рекомендовал их для джаза, классики, хороших концертных записей, живой музыки. Чуть меньше они подходят для тяжелого металла и электроники, но тут скорее вопрос в предпочитаемой подаче, если вам нравится аналитичный звук, то будет неплохо. К качеству треков MSR7 очень чувствительны, я бы сказал, где-то на 9 баллов из 10. С ними реально стоит заморочиться поиском хороших ремастеров и треков в lossless.

Marvin Gaye — Flyin’ High (in the Friendly Sky). Естественно, вокал — это конек данной модели, а лучший альбом короля блюза — именно то, что позволяет MSR7 раскрыться в полной мере. Марвин великолепно владеет голосом, а данные наушники отлично это передают.

Göteborgs Symfoniker — Половецкие пляски. Одно из самых знаменитых произведений Бородина, безусловно, является подходящим для наушников материалом. Отыграть партии симфонического оркестра во всем его многообразии — именно то, что получается у них очень хорошо.

Rush — YYZ. Тот случай, когда одно трио вполне способно заменить собою целый оркестр, настолько многопланова и сложна их музыка. Данный трек показывает, что у талантливой группы даже три буквы «морзянкой» способы послужить толчком к созданию интересного инструментала. MSR7, в свою очередь, очень стараются передать этот трек именно так, как нужно, и, пожалуй, у них получается.

What Every Buyer Should Know about the Audio Technica ATH-R70X

The Audio-Technica R70x features a thin metal mesh on the outside of each ear cup, a soft pad on the inside, and a stripped-down, industrial-looking design. The R70x are among the lightest over-ear headphones available, weighing just 210 grams (7.4 oz) without the wire. The R70x are acoustically transparent thanks to their perforated cup design, which means you can hear anything outside of them almost as well as you can when you’re not wearing them, and people in the same room can hear whatever you’re listening to. That’s the cost of open-back headphones, but it’s well worth it when they produce sound that in-ear or closed-back over-ear headphones can’t match, as the R70x does.

The R70x’s extra light weight makes a big difference in how comfortable they are over longer listens, and you can wear them for hours without even realizing they’re on your head. Despite its lightness, Audio-Technica incorporates some exotic composite materials to give strength and stability. The included cable is about 3 meters long (studio use, remember), and it connects to the headphones with a proprietary locking mechanism.

The dead flat EQ is the most intriguing aspect of the R70x headset, as stylish and comfy as it is. Many of Audio Technica’s headphones have an adjusted AT EQ, which slightly warms the sound to create a gratifying overall experience, but the R70x has no such fiddling, leaving a remarkably smooth and balanced sound character. There are no peaks, dips, or distortions in the sound reproductions, which are common when the EQ is modified. The R70x feature a nice rich and slightly warm character with smooth transitions from bass to treble even without a changed sound profile. It may be a touch too smooth for others, especially if you prefer more bombastic music and gaming.

The demand for power is an important element that the Audio-Technica R70x shares with more expensive headphones. These headphones feature a 470 Ohm impedance, which is an order of magnitude higher than ordinary headphones, necessitating the use of a high-powered amplifier. The R70x are fantastic for RPGs, adventure games, and anything else with a lot of dialogue and few explosions. However, if you’re a serious FPS player, you’ll probably find the sound mix a little too flat, with equal weighting given to all audio ranges making combat sound less exciting and explosive than it should. Some folks may be turned off by the lack of a microphone.

The Audio-Technica M70x are decent headphones for neutral listening. They’re bass-lacking compared to the Audio-Technica M50x, which deliver a more balanced listening experience. However, they have a decent soundstage despite being closed-back headphones. They also have an instrument-heavy audio reproduction that will please some listeners but may be too sharp for most.

В завершение хотелось бы сказать, что производитель Audio-Technica обновил и без того достаточно интересную модель премиум-класса для домашнего использования. После доработки модель ATH-AD700X стала не только хорошо звучать, но и классно выглядеть. Поэтому рекомендуем ее к покупке.

Плюсы:

Хороший и «взрослы» звук;
Обновленный и стильный дизайн;
Особая система фиксации наушников на голове для большего комфорта;
Длинный кабель 3 метра – отличное решение для домашнего использования;
Наличие переходника в комплекте.

Минусы:

Штекер можно было сделать полностью металлическим (но это скорее придирки).
