Dimensions & Handling

Despite the healthier infusion of metal in the Sundara design, the weight has not gone up too much, if at all. The Sundara weighs in at 372g compared to 370g for the HE400i and still 3g less than the HE560. The handling though has changed slightly.

Despite both having a similar weight the Sundara is a bit easier to work with and handle. A lot of that has to do with the redesigned headband and pivot system. Hifiman has actually gotten rid of the swivel functionality of the older HE series headphones so it no longer folds flat. Some might not be as fussed on that lack of flexibility but Hifiman does compensate with a small amount of cup swivel for fitting purposes.

One clear benefit of the more rigid design is the enhanced strength of the gimbals. The previous gimbals had a plastic finish that had a certain weakness to them and they could crack with heavy use. Now the gimbals and joints are made of anodized aluminum in a matte black finish and look far more durable than before.

Roger Daltrey — Amazing Journey (Live) Ну и продолжим тему переработок классики, хотя на этот раз и не таких кардинальных. Роджер Долтри решил, что не стареют душой ветераны, и решил перезаписать “Томми”, но сделать это вживую и с симфоническим оркестром. Получилось не идеально, ведь вокал по силе уже немного “не тот”, но в остальном, альбом очень радует, особенно в исполнении героев сегодняшнего обзора: живое, динамичное исполнение с драйвом концерта и масштабностью рок-оперы. Ananda показывает себя с лучшей стороны: объёмная сцена, энергия, динамика — всё это им удаётся без напряжения.

Timothy Williams — Called to the Barn Будем откровенны, идея “плохого Супермена” витала в воздухе уже давно (и нет, я не про отвратительный кастинг экранизаций DCU), существо, наделённое почти бесконечной силой, но не обладающее гуманизмом и зачатками морали — это, пожалуй, достойный финал человечества. Попытки обыграть образ главного супергероя предпринимались уже давно (мне нравится серия про Супермена в СССР), но именно “Гори, гори ясно” стал первой “правильной” реализацией идеи на киноэкранах. Разумеется, любой современный фильм немыслим без саундтрека, и в данном случае Тимоти Уильямс справился просто отлично. Правильный микс симфонической музыки и эмбиента способствует погружению в атмосферу фильма, а помогают в прослушивании изодинамы HiFiMan, максимально качественно отыгрывающие глубокие слои НЧ и внезапные удары, которыми так любит взбадривать слушателя данный саундтрек.

Перед прослушиванием наушники были прогреты на протяжении 140 часов, изменения в звуке наблюдались первые часов 100.

В целом, Andnda дают всё то, что ожидаешь от изодинамических наушников, в их активе есть отличное разрешение, качественная проработка микроконтраста, контроль по всему частотному диапазону. Но при этом их подача сделана такой, чтоб избегать мониторности, характерной для многих изодинам, они эмоциональны и драйвовы, но, разумеется, без перегибов.

Низкие частоты нейтральные, без ярко выраженных акцентов, но общая подача наушников имеет очень лёгкий и слабо выраженный оттенок теплоты. При этом Ananda демонстрируют характерную для планаров плотность баса и очень грамотно дозируют его вес, обеспечивая очень натуральную передачу текстур и характера “низкочастотных” инструментов. Разумеется про такие вещи как глубина и разрешение нет даже смысла говорить, всё-таки перед нами изодинамические излучатели, “приготовленные” с умом. Так же хорошо данной модели удаются различные удары и раскаты.

Если смотреть на АЧХ, средние частоты немного ослаблены относительно НЧ и ВЧ, но, благодаря отличному разрешению и достаточному фокусу на микроконтрасте, ощущения зажатости или “провала” на середине нет. Вследствие этого, среднечастотный диапазон звучит открыто и динамично, радуя любителей детальности и не расстраивая ценителей подчёркнутых эмоций и правильного баланса веса. У Ananda есть небольшой подъём в области верхней середины, дополнительно подчёркивающий вокал (особенно женский) и ряд инструментов, добавляя звуку ясности и чистоты. Воображаемая сцена заметно больше средней в ширину и немного больше среднего в глубину, в целом по объёмности, до флагманов наушники не дотягивают, но в своём сегменте являются одними из лидеров.

Верхнечастотный диапазон грамотно оттюнингован для любителей комфортной подачи. Разумеется, разрешение ВЧ, их атаки с затуханиями а так же слоистость и вес тут более чем хороши. “Верха” звучат приятно и при этом не напрягающе, эффектно насыщая музыку необходимыми обертонами и затуханиями. Участок выше 10 кГц немного ослаблен для того чтоб наушники не выпячивали огрехи мастеринга и сведения, характерные для современных записей, но сделали это умеренно, поэтому с протяжённостью ВЧ больших проблем нет.

JDS Atom

A good all-around desktop solution for both would be my current favorite, the JDS Atom. The Atom comes power-packed with features and also doubles as a preamp via its RCA Analog outputs. It’s also got a pair of RCA ins, a 3.5mm input that can be paired with virtually any DAC that has a line out, and a gain button just in case you needed even more power (Spoiler alert: the Atom has a mind-numbing amount).

Outside of these, I wouldn’t get too carried away in trying to decide on an Amp. Out of the 25+ that I’ve heard, most sound roughly the same. There are slight variances in certain ones, but by and large, I would recommend figuring out how much power your headphones need and choosing based on that. Discerning actual sound differences almost becomes an exercise in futility and the variances are very subtle.

With that, let’s wind this down and take a look at my recommendation!

Build Quality and Design

The Sundara is built around a new and improved Neo “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD) that is 80% thinner than the older HE400 series and offers a faster and more detailed response plus an improved frequency range.

At a glance, the Sundara appears to have a minimalist utilitarian design and one that I find quite appealing. The majority of the components are matte black metal except for the plastic enclosures that surround the adjustment sliders.

A lightweight spring steel headband forms the backbone of the headphones and unlike some other headphones with this feature, the headband does not vibrate or ring when moved or bumped. There is a wide faux leather strap attached to the plastic adjustment slider enclosures.

The headphones’ yokes are lightweight but feel reassuringly strong. Their matte black finish perfectly matches the outer band of the earcups which are made from the same material. A lattice wire grill forms the framework for the open backs of the earcups.

The Sundara’s angled earpads are a hybrid design which features a faux leather band around the diameter and a porous fabric material on the side that rests against your ears. The headphones weigh just 372g and do not emit any squeaks or rattles when handled. Overall the build quality feels outstanding and at the same time very cleverly designed to maximize the user experience.

Comfort

Unlike some of Hifiman’s other headphones, the Sundara’s earpads do not swivel from side to side. This does not seem to have any negative effect on comfort and actually makes the headphones feel more robust and stable.

The wide headband does a fantastic job of evenly distributing any pressure on the top of the head. I find the clamping force to be strong enough to hold the headphones in place without exerting any excessive pressure on the head. Thus, for me, they are extremely comfortable, even during long listening sessions.

With the porous fabric on the inner side of the earpads and open backs, my ears stay relatively cool. Additionally, the pads are thick enough to prevent my ears from resting against the hard driver enclosure. The Sundara is one of the most comfortable headphones in my collection, right up there with the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro.

Cable

The included 1.5 m OFC cable feels high-quality but it is quite bouncy due to the rubber sheath. When attaching the cable to the headphones there is a very satisfying click as they lock into place. On the other end of the cable, it terminates in a right-angled metal 3.5 mm plug. Fortunately, it isn’t any concern when in use and additionally there is virtually no microphonics at all. Additionally, this cable is extremely resistant to any tangling.

3.5 mm TRS connectors replaced the 2.5 mm ones that were on previous models. The jacks on the earcups are non-recessed which makes them more compatible with many third-party cables. In fact, it made it super easy for me to be able to test the 2.5 mm balanced SPC cable from my Meze 99 Classics.

Reviewing Hifiman Sundara

The Hifiman Sundara comes with a few basic accessories – a 1/4” stereo plug and a cushioned box.  And that’s about it.  Like most Hifiman headphones, this model doesn’t boast a bunch of extra bells and whistles – it’s really all about the sound.

Constructed from a durable aluminum with a leatherette suspension-style headband, the Sundara is lightweight and comfortable, while still feeling rather solid.  Doubtlessly, it could take a beating, whether you tend to mistreat your earpieces or, like me, your cable.

With a heavy-duty construction and an overall length of 5 ft (1.5 m), the Sundara’s dual-entry cable is anything but fragile.

As we can see from the specs, the Sundara offers a whopping frequency range of 6-75,000 Hz, a low impedance of just 37 ohms, and an SPL of 94 dB.  As such, we can expect plenty of detail and a lack of power consumption, recommending these cans for use with low-output devices, such as phones, computers, and personal audio players.  While harmonic distortion isn’t rated by the manufacturer, I’d place it easily around the <0.1% mark.

Low End

Sporting decent impact without being too powerful or overwhelming, the low end on this headphone sounds natural while still offering excellent detail.  Crisp with no bleed, it’s a stately low end for a stately headphone.

Mids

In the mids, there’s a real sense of fidelity at play.  No compression or distortion ruins the sound here, and the overall impression is one of near-perfection with TONS of detail.

High End

A little bright but true-to-life, the high end of the Sundara offers a very detailed sound.  Proving piercing only where the highest highs are concerned, I was pleasantly surprised by the well-developed sound.  And while I was half-fearing a too-bright, screeching sound to the high end, the overall smoothness of this high end makes me wonder if I really can hear a difference thanks to that 75,000 Hz frequency range.

Soundstage

It should be no surprise that Hifiman delivers plenty of depth and placement here, resulting in a sense of soundstage that is never anything but realistic.  Sucking you in and dragging you down through whatever music you throw at it, this soundstage is almost tangible.  My only misgiving here remains the intense low end, which can sometimes overwhelm other elements of the soundstage.

Other Observations

Comfort!  Like all but the heaviest Hifiman headphones, the Sundara is no slouch when it comes to longer listening sessions.  You can leave these bad boys on for hours and never feel a thing – apart from the ecstasy, that is.

The sound.  All around, the sound is just an amazing blend of detail and accuracy, with well-controlled but highly emotive lows and highs.  Add to this the spot-on mids and the robust soundstage and you have one hell of a headphone.

Recommendations

If money is no object, and only the best is to be had, Hifiman’s more expensive offerings will deliver a compelling decision for any discerning audiophile. It may not be suited for travel or use on the daily commute, where an objectively “best sounding headphone” is concerned, the Sundara provides the final word at the $500 price point.

Final Analysis

Whether you’re looking for dynamic highs and lows or razor-sharp mids, the competent sound and comfortable design of the Hifiman Sundara makes this one headphone you won’t want to overlook.

Final Word

If budget is more of a concern, the Sundara is just about the perfect mid-fi audiophile headphone. Its warmer, more laid-back character lends itself well with most genres but still remains incredibly detailed and engaging. Along with headphones like the HD 600/650, I consider the Sundara a quintessential offering from HIFIMAN that carves out quite a nice niche for itself.

I’ve described the Ananda as a true step up from the mid-fi category, and I still stand behind that statement wholeheartedly.

It’s an upgrade in every sense of the word with regard to overall sound quality, imaging capabilities, versatility, comfort, and build. If you’re looking for the best all-around planar magnetic headphone at a somewhat reasonable price (all things considered), look no further.

Form Factor

If you have been a Hifiman headphone user for any number of years the first thing that will strike you about the Sundara is the modernistic clean lines and lack of fussiness, particularly around the hinges and cups.

The form factor is very coherent with a more consistent matt black coloring and a use of materials that seem better finished and more durable than before. There is a clear preference for metal over plastics in the Sundara and it feels all the better for it.

Some of the key innovations Hifiman originally brought into the HE400 series are retained in the Sundara’s design.  It does not look “unlike” a Hifiman headphone with it’s logo prominently on the side of the headband and the use of the Focus A detachable pads.

Whilst the headband is radically changed in functionality and materials it still sports a split metal design at the top and both still use a pressure displacement secondary strap below the metal headband arch.

The grills on the cups have also had an upgrade from the previous thin wire open honeycomb plate design to a stronger lattice designed wire grid which looks a lot stronger than before.
