Design: KZ ZSN PRO vs ZST PRO
The KZ ZST PRO earphones are made from hard plastic which isn’t fragile, but quite the opposite. Unlike other plastic devices, the KZ ZST PRO earphones are sturdy in a manner that is surprising for something made out of plastic. The colorful nature of the KZ ZST PRO earphones justifies the other name it is known by, the KZ ZST Colorful. It comes in many different color variants. The earbuds feature a detachable 2-pin system. This allows other cables with 2 pins to be used according to the user’s preference. The cable that comes with the KZ ZST PRO earphones unit is of two versions – ones with the universal inline remote and without it.
The 2-pin connector fits perfectly into the earbuds and is made of a transparent plastic material. Colored with a smoke tint, the 4 colorful wires which are twisted inside can be seen, giving it raw and natural aesthetic. With the base made of a similar hard plastic like the ZST PRO, a metal finish also adorns the back in the KZ ZSN PRO headphones. The ZSN PRO is shaped more like a design seen in TWS earphone models hitting the market. The KZ ZSN PRO also has a detachable 2-pin connector system which can also be upgraded to a Bluetooth headset with the purchase of a Bluetooth module sold separately. The cable that comes with the KZ ZSN PRO headphones also is in two variants like the ZST PRO.
Comparing the KZ ZST PRO vs ZSN PRO in terms of design, the ZST PRO looks to be the winner with its colorful and sleek design while the ZSN PRO is pretty basic in comparison.

Verdict: Best under $20 Earphones in 2019!

With two wonderful wired earphones sold below $20 by KZ, KZ ZST PRO vs ZSN PRO is difficult to proclaim a single standout winner. When one looks at cost, design and audio performance (ignoring the slight leak in audio), it is the ZST PRO that comes on top. Even then, the upgradable option of the ZSN PRO to a wireless Bluetooth headset can’t be ignored.
Considering that Gearbest is offering them at the same price for a few days, the preference is to opt for the KZ ZST PRO earphones, unless you’re looking for a Bluetooth option. In that case, the KZ ZSN PRO headphones should be your choice which costs the same, plus an additional amount to buy the Bluetooth module which is sold separately. The exclusion of the Bluetooth module with the ZSN PRO is one more reason to opt for the ZST PRO.
Package and Accessories
Just like the original ZSN, KZ has opted for a simple and small box for the ZSN Pro. The box is white in colour and has an illustration of the monitors on the front.
On the back of the box is a list of specifications and company information. Inside the box is the familiar black, moulded plastic tray with the earpieces on display just above the KZ logo. Below the plastic is, of course, the accessories. Here’s what you get:
- KZ ZSN earphone
- Detachable 0.75mm 2-pin cable
- 4 pairs of silicone Starline tips
- User guide/warranty
A lot of people love the KZ Starline eartips. I would like to love them but they’re built for tiny pixie ears and are unusable for me. Anyway, it’s a standard KZ package which any KZ owner should be familiar with by now.

Build Quality and Design
The ZSN Pro model is available in 3 colours: purple, grey and blue. My sample unit is the purple variation and I must say I find it quite handsome. The housings are almost identical to the original except for a couple of minor changes.
For example, the metal faceplates look the same at a glance but look closer and you’ll notice that the zig-zag pattern is now raised rather than grooved. Additionally, there is now a single screw and vent whereas the original had 3. Furthermore, if you look at the specs you’ll see that the weight has increased slightly from 23g to 29 grams.
The upgraded double magnetic dynamic driver increases volume by 30%, along with improved frequency response and higher sensitivity. Overall, the build quality is outstanding considering how affordable these earphones are.
Comfort and Noise Isolation
Like the original ZSN and the CCA C10 which shares the same shell, the ZSN Pro is a very comfortable earphone (at least for me). If you’ve tried either of the other 2 you’ll know exactly what to expect in terms of fit.
Passive noise isolation is quite good. According to KZ marketing, the housings can block out up to 26dB of external noise. Accordingly, there’s minimal noise leak so this is an earphone you can take anywhere.
Cable
Once again KZ have supplied their famous brown-coloured cable. This one comes with pre-formed ear guides which I much prefer over memory wire. The same transparent slot-design 2-pin connectors are present again, in addition to the stupidly placed Y-split that regularly makes the cable a tangled mess.
A right-angled and rubberized 3.5 mm plug is the final component of the cable. All things considered, it is a reasonably high-quality cable but I personally switch it out for a third-party option as soon as possible.
Bass & Sub Bass
Bass on the KZ ZSN PRO X is rich and fun with a punchy profile and plenty strength to fulfill any track’s requirements.
In spite of this, this is not a “bass-exclusively” sounding earphone, it is just able to provide an exciting and pumping bass that it is still not excessively over-tuned.
It is fair to note that, as many recent models from KZ, sub-bass is a tiny bit less overcooked than some old-school KZ earphones; allowing a larger margin for frequencies distribution.
Users looking for the same type of bass seen on most 2020 and many 2019 KZ earphones will feel at home with the bass response of the KZ ZSN PRO X.
With an EQ, their lower end can be pushed into seriously deep sub-bass territory to cover up the needs of sub-bass centered tracks.

KZ ZSN PRO XM
Sound
Gear used for testing includes the FiiO M6 and iBasso DX120 as my portable sources. On the desktop, the FiiO K3 was fed FLAC files from my PC via USB. Generally speaking, the ZSN Pro does not require any extra amplification and will work with any source including smartphones.
The KZ ZSN Pro has the same general signature as the original i.e. a very powerful bass with a slightly recessed midrange and an upper midrange boost. However, the upgraded version has some slight sonic improvements; it’s not so much a different tuning but an alternative one.
Bass
Undoubtedly the focus and the star of the show, the ZSN Pro’s bass is big, bold and bangin’. The amount of gusto in the low end should satisfy anyone who likes a large lick of bass and even certified bassheads will probably get a kick out of this.
With the upgraded dynamic driver in place, the Pro has even more impact than before. Sub-bass notes hit you like a subwoofer with a physical, palpable character. This is not an IEM for the faint of heart where bass is concerned.
The mid-bass punches hard and has a relatively speedy response for something with this tonality. It maintains an admirable pace and even holds up to tracks like Thundercat’s “Uh Uh” without bogging down.
Mids
There’s a little bass bleed present, providing extra warmth and body to the lower mids. Deeper male vocals lose a little bite in the mix. This can be seen in songs like “Buildings” by Katatonia where the vocals feel blanketed by the earphones lower registers. Female vocals fare better and rise out of the din more clearly.
Treble
The Pro is fairly lively in the treble and it needs to be to counterbalance that powerful bass. Fortunately, it stays smooth enough to not be jarring although I feel the timbre of crash cymbals is a little off-kilter. Honestly, though, the fact that I’m even talking about timbre on a $20 earphone indicates that it’s still pretty darn good. While it won’t mask a recording’s inherent sibilance, it doesn’t add any and I find the tone mostly pleasing.
Soundstage
The soundstage is fairly intimate but it feels natural enough. There is more depth to the stage than there is width, creating an elliptical shape that stretches out in front of the listener. Instrument separation is good and imaging is moderate.
Comparisons
KZ ZSN
Naturally, people will be curious as to how the ZSN Pro measures up to the original model. The first thing I noticed is that the Pro sounds fuller and thicker. The new dynamic driver has better extension and thicker mid-bass notes. While it does feel more controlled, it’s as though KZ boosted it even more than on the original just to highlight the fact.
As we go into the midrange, the extra punch in the bass carries over to here making it more full-bodied and rounded. Male vocals are softer on the ZSN Pro but there are improvements in the upper midrange. The ZSN’s upper mids lacked body and the Pro sounds fuller and less grainy.
The ZSN Pro has a more forward lower treble from 4-7kHz while the ZSN peaked earlier at 3-4kHz. To my ears, the Pro’s lower treble is a bit more even and for the most part, handles sibilance better. However, the ZSN upper treble has a more natural timbre.
Conclusion
So is the KZ ZSN Pro a true upgrade from the original ZSN? In some ways it is but in others it’s not, making it more of a side-grade. Which one sounds best to you will probably just come down to a couple of key factors. At first, I was ready to throw my hat in the Pro’s corner but really both models have a lot of merits.
I just wish that KZ had been able to implement the new bass driver without boosting the quantity of the bass, which was already borderline excessive in the first place. Apart from that though, we have to keep in mind that this is a $20 earphone and I’m willing to acquiesce on some minor quibbles. Assuming you like some phat bass, the KZ ZSN Pro is another KZ value overload.
Audio Performance: KZ ZST PRO vs ZSN PRO
The KZ ZST PRO earphone provides a balanced audio experience with the bass and vocals boosted slightly. The treble is well-balanced with the mids. This ratio of trebles to mids and vocals to bass is in a perfect combination to make it to a good musical memory. With a good quality seen in most songs, the KZ ZST PRO falters a bit when it comes to songs with multiple instruments present at the same time, with distinguishing features between instruments slowly starting to blend in and a slight change is felt. This is quite normal for a sub $20 earphone. The sound isolation provided by the KZ ZST PRO earphones is quite good, but the sound tends to leak a little when used in quiet environments.
The KZ ZSN PRO headphones present a much more basic audio performance. The bass isn’t put out with the mids, vocals and trebles all kept at an equalised level. While these settings are good enough for most songs, ones that have sudden peaks or dips suffer a loss in quality. The sound isolation is of great magnitude in the KZ ZSN PRO headphones with absolute isolation attained with a slight increase in volume. The sound leak is also much better than seen in other headphones of this price range.
The balanced audio tuning levels in the KZ ZST PRO earphones compensates for the small leaks in audio.
KZ ZST PRO vs ZSN PRO is a tight battle in the aspect of audio performance as there are only subtle differences between both of them. The KZ ZST PRO earphones take it home as an enriched audio output is more important than a slightly less leak in sound.
Comfort: KZ ZSN PRO vs ZST PRO
The KZ ZST PRO earphones don’t weigh much and are ergonomically shaped to provide a comfortable fit. The inclusion of two extra pairs of silicone tips in different sizes helps people with different ear shapes to accommodate the KZ ZST PRO earphones in a comfortable manner. The large size of the earbuds pose problems for some people with small ear sizes when used continuously for long amounts of time at a stretch. While comfortable at first, a feeling of being pushed emerges with time.
The KZ ZSN PRO headphones are designed in a manner that the cable is to be kept over the ear and through the back like Bluetooth earphones. This wire design stays the same in both the Bluetooth module sold separately as well as in the basic cable that comes with the ZSN PRO unit. This manner is made comfortable with the type of cable employed. Some models falter in employing this cable manner resulting in an uncomfortable usage, while that isn’t what happens with the KZ ZSN PRO headphones.
The KZ ZSN PRO headphones might bag the comfort category with its smooth wire.
Deciding the comfort king between the KZ ZST PRO vs ZSN PRO is easy due to the different methods. While the KZ ZST RPO earphones are comfortable with the ergonomic design, the incompatible nature for people having smaller ear sizes makes it lose out to the KZ ZSN PRO headphones.

Highs & Treble
Highs of the KZ ZSN PRO X are bright and sufficiently well-detailed for most standard music genres.
Moreover, their highs profile present, as well, a fairly open sound (for a closed back headphone) that does not arrives as busy as other bassy earphones on the market.
However and unfortunately, with intense highs, the KZ ZSN PRO X suffered from frequent and strong sibilance and recurring piercing spikes.
When looking at the highs of the KZ ZSN PRO X, it can be clearly seen why there was a “hotter” upper mids retuning feel than on older generations. Indeed, the boosting of the highs applied to this new model is responsible of the harsher mids sensation.
Appling an EQ, there was not very easy to flat out the fatiguing peaks shown – it is highly advised to avoid any highs boosting attempt, as this is a model that will become too sibilant and piercing when taking this kind of EQ path.
8/10
SL
Mids & Vocals
Overall, the midrange of the ZSN PRO X will offer full-sounding male vocals and very present female vocals.
On the other hand, a bit of congestion and mid-bass bleed will be heard by more demanding listeners who search for pristine lower mids.
In addition to this, the upper mids of the PRO X provide a crisp, yet sometimes harshy sound that can affect shouty vocals and strong upper midrange peaks that fall into borderline ranges with high-frequency notes – for the rest of the upper mids notes, the ZSN PRO X will not exhibit harsh spikes nor intolerably fatiguing sound.
Using an EQ, our team was able to reach a very efficient retuning of their midrange with noticeable improvement over congestion and a bit of smoothing of the hot peaks.
