Polk audio t15: звучание, что дорогого стоит

Build

How you judge the exterior aesthetics of the Polk Audio T15 will depends largely on how much your wallet influences your taste. In a vacuum, these are far from the most gorgeous speakers we’ve seen. But, as soon as we start judging the exterior – and the overall build – of the T15 relative to its price and to the competition it has in this price range, things start to look up.

At the MSRP of $100, these are one of the nicer looking speakers you’ll find. They’re made of a half-inch MDF that’s topped off with a wood-grain texture that’s both appealing and refreshing next to all the vinyl. It also has the benefit of being black, meaning that it will integrate quite nicely in a variety of setups without any problems.

What’s more, the front looks surprisingly modern despite the fact that the T15 is resting comfortably in its winter years. So, visually speaking, rocking these speakers without the grilles on shouldn’t be a problem in most cases, but if it is, the grilles can make them wholly inconspicuous.

So, what can you pair these bad boys with?

Well, they work in a variety of situations: they’re awesome for home cinema and perfectly capable of bringing an immersive experience on their own in a simple stereo configuration. But they can also be used either as front or rear speakers in a surround sound configuration, as they’re fully compatible with both Dolby and DTS.

Then there’s the music, of course, and most of the sound evaluation will deal with how they perform. But we also have to mention that, due to the fairly compact size, these speakers can also work wonders as PC peripherals, delivering a high level of immersion to any AAA-title. Although seeing as they’re passive speakers, you’ll definitely want to hook them up to an amp to get the most out of them.

And this is the only thing that can somewhat hamper their cost-effectiveness; if you’re looking to make a single purchase and be good to go, a slightly more expensive pair of active speakers may end up saving you money in the long run. We don’t think this is a bad thing. In fact, having passive speakers is in many ways preferable, but there’s definitely an audience who’d appreciate a simpler ‘plug-and-play’ product over this.

Overall, the speakers are well made and sturdy, and to testify to this, Polk slapped on a 5-year warranty onto the T15. This is a nice and reassuring bonus, but you more than likely won’t be using it.

Diving Deeper

Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

It has an impedance of about 8 ohms and a power of 100 watts magnetically shielded and its passive speakers. They have a nice black wood finish them and a base port upfront.

Around the back, they have the standard black and red speaker wire connections.

I decided to go with the black speaker stands just to compliment the nice finish that the speakers have on them.

I have to say, I like how the speakers look in my room setup and they fit with the decor very well.

They can easily fill up a medium-sized room with a nice amount of sound, very good highs, and mid-range.

It does maybe like a little bass, but for the size of what the speakers are and the price point of only about $70, you can’t beat it.

Overall I was very impressed by these speakers, the T15s from Polk are very good bookshelf speakers, and especially for the price point of only about $70 for a pair that’s hard to be.

I listen to these speakers with a wide variety of music and movies. You can’t go wrong buying these.

Conclusion

So, are the Polk Audio T15 speakers the best speakers ever? Heck no!

But they’re phenomenal when you add their price to the mix, and this is how we handle scores in our reviews. Even at the MSRP of $100, these have a lot to offer, but when you take into consideration the fact that these are fairly old speakers that are on discounts more often than not, they become the ultimate budget solution, with a capital A for Affordable.

The price doesn’t get any lower than this without seriously compromising the sound quality.

We find the design to be rather gorgeous for such an inexpensive model and the specs inside it have aged really well. So if the T15 tickles your fancy, we suggest buying it sooner rather than later as we can easily see the model getting discontinued in the near future, although waiting for the next sale to get them at a hefty discount certainly won’t hurt.

On the other hand, if you want something similar but a bit more powerful and pricey, check out our review of the Klipsch R-15M.

Polk Audio T15: Comparison

First I Want To Touch On Warranties

In Mica mb42x, you get a one-year warranty, the Dayton b652 air, and the Polk audio T15, you get a 5-year warranty.

Outside that, the major difference is that the Polk T15 and the mb42x are going to have 5 weight binding posts. The Dayton b652 air has spring terminals, unfortunately.

The mica mb42x is the only one with magnetic grills. The only two have the other two traditional style grills. The Dayton b652 has a six and half mid-woofer, the Polk Audio T15 has a five-and-a-quarter, while the Mica has the smallest mid-woofer at 4 inches.

All three of them have slight size differences, same depth but different height and width, but obviously, Mica is the smallest.

Now, Let’s Talk About The Finishes

This is kind of important in my opinion. So, the Dayton b652 air has the worst finish out of the box.

The same spot you will find on both Polk audio T15 and Mica as well.

That was a bit of a bummer.

However, the Polk Audio  T15 has the best finish by a long shot. This is going to be one of the benefits of buying from a major brand.

Polk Audio is the biggest company in this trio here. Mica is the smallest, Dayton is probably somewhere in the middle.

Polk Audio has been doing this for the longest and has the most notoriety. They have the brand to protect. They have more of a budget for these things, and they probably buy these kinds of sheets of vinyl in bulk.

I’m just guessing that they can afford to slap them on anything. The finish on Polk is real, you can feel it by just a touch. It feels somewhat premium. There’s a texture to it. It seems much to be thicker and much heavier.

I will say as far as build quality goes, the Polk Audio T15 probably takes the cake.

Let’s Get Into The Sound

So, starting with the high-end frequencies, the mica mb42x has that sharp top-end sound, it’s going to be the brightest and have the largest sound stage. You know that the brighter speaker is going to image better.

Typically, the daytonb652 Air, on the other hand, is going to be the smoothest sounding. It has a bit of a smaller sound stage where it’s going to stay between the speakers.

Mb42x extends out beyond the speakers. While the Polk audio T15 is going to be somewhere in the middle, neither sharp nor smooth. Its top end is kind of just right in the middle, but it is on the forward side of neutral.

The sound profile is brighter, pushed into the room a bit more. All three of them will push it out into the room.

Let’s Talk About The Mid-Range

The mid-range on the mica mb42x has some peaks almost to give an artificial sense of loudness. The mid-range on the Dayton b652 air also has some peaks but in a way that boosts vocal performance and lets the vocals be separated from the music.

That’s a good thing and a bad thing. Good, because of vocals pop, bad because it does kind of show you in contrast that the music itself is not going to be as good because the vocal has a good shot, like a light shining on it and the rest of the music can sound a little congested.

In comparison, the MB42x never sounds congested. On the other hand, the Polk T15 is a bit of an interesting one here.

Polk Audio T15 Alternatives to Consider

Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers

At around the same price, these bookshelf speakers are a great alternative. A slightly smaller woofer will produce less low-end, but that’s little to no problem considering the T15s have little low end, to begin with.

For the extra $10, you’re missing out on wall hooks and the front-ported design. These speakers aren’t meant to be pushed up against a wall, so you may want to consider that before purchasing. At any rate, they sound great for the price, and, at only $90, it’s hard to go wrong with them.

Klipsch RB-51 II

Stepping up in price is a pair of bookshelf speakers from Klipsch. These speakers are almost double the cost, but they sound much better than the T15s. The beautiful copper spun woofer and exceptional Klipsch sound put these in a class of their own.

If there was one word to describe these speakers, it would be “natural”. Klipsch is known for its natural sound from its speakers, and these are no exception. Everything seems right in place, as opposed to the T15s which are slightly scooped in the midrange.

Polk Audio TSi100

If you want to stay within the Polk line, these speakers seriously step up the sound for only a little more. The look is spruced up to match Polk’s LSi series of speakers, adding some nice flair to your setup.

On paper, the two are almost identical. However, the midrange on these speakers is much more refined. As opposed to a solid scoop, the curve seems more natural, nipping at the heels of the Klipsch’s, but falling just slightly short.

Polk Audio T15 Alternatives

If you are not completely satisfied with what Polk Audio T15 has to offer, we’ll be glad to help you find a suitable alternative. But, what’s the best alternative gonna be depends on your preferences, as well as your budget.

For example, if you’re looking for even cheaper bookshelf speakers, there aren’t too many options before you. Edifier R980T is the only set of bookshelf speakers in the same price range as Polk Audio T15 that’s equally good. Actually, because Edifier R980T are powered speakers, some believe they’re an even better option than the T15.

And if the audio quality is what concerns you, not the price, then our advice is to take a look what KEF has in the offer. KEF LS50 bookshelf speakers are the ones that first come to mind. They are more expensive, but their audio performances are out of this world!

All the bookshelf speakers we have mentioned come only in black color. If you want something more colorful, we have some ideas in mind. Edifier R1280T is a set of bookshelf speakers that really stands out with its design. At the same time, these speakers are also amazing in terms of performances, something that you can learn more about by reading our Edifier R1280T review.

Polk Audio T15 Bookshelf Speakers – Budget Bookshelf Speakers that Deliver Crystal Clear Sound

Established in the early seventies, Polk Audio is an American manufacturer of loudspeakers known for making quality products that do not cost too much. And Polk Audio T15 bookshelf speakers perfectly fit this description.

T15 speakers are designed to deliver clear audio in a wide range of frequencies, with as little distortions as possible. Vocals sound natural, highs are resonance-free, and even bass is surprisingly good.

We say ‘surprisingly’ because the experience has shown that budget speakers aren’t too good when it comes to playing low frequency notes. But, if you turn the bass up on your Polk Audio T15, it won’t ruin the balance, even if you keep your hands off of treble.

Sure, when shopping for a set of bookshelf speakers, you’re looking for loudspeakers that are gonna impress you with their audio performances. But, you also want the speakers to look nice. After all, bookshelf speakers are meant to be kept on the bookshelf where everyone is gonna see them.

Polk Audio T15 are great in this aspect as well. Their all-black design makes them a suitable choice for anyone. Black is always in fashion and these speakers won’t disturb the harmony of your interior design. And because each of the two speakers in the set is pretty compact, you should have no problems finding room for them.

As the name of this type of speakers suggests, they belong on the bookshelf. But, you can keep them elsewhere without worrying they would look misplaced. In fact, a number of users choose to keep them on the wall. This is actually something the manufacturer had in mind when they added keyhole slots at the back of each unit.

Polk Audio T15 – Final Verdict

Money makes the world go around and if you’re willing to spend a few hundreds or even thousands of dollars, you can choose from all sorts of loudspeakers. But, if you don’t want to spend more than a hundred dollars, your choices are more limited. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find good bookshelf speakers in that price range. You can! And Polk Audio T15 are the proof!

These speakers deliver pretty good audio performances on a budget. They also look classy and are very easy to use. On top of that, Polk Audio did a really good job constructing them to be sturdy and durable, so after buying the T15 speakers, you won’t have to get new ones for years. Our question is what more can you ask from a set of bookshelf speakers?

Movies And Television Watching

Movie Watching

I watched a few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. If you’re into medical dramas, then this is the best you could ever watch. The dialogues’ intelligibility and perfect set of musical backgrounds make up the whole mood.

I  watched it in stereo, so only Polk audio T15 speakers and their subwoofers could generate sound with good dialogue intelligibility.

One reason for this is that there is no center line speaker in the Polk audio series., which makes the whole sound come equally unlike up and down.

Dialogues and lyrics come through without creating any glitches. The cupping effect was too slight to be noticeable. The musical effects all went fine, so I feel whatever the shortcomings I heard about these speakers, those were so small to be noticed while watching.

It didn’t become a matter of hindrance to my enjoyment. I was almost lost in the show, noticing the world around me, such a mesmerizing experience. It simply means that the speakers are doing their job well.

So, people out there who are looking for an inexpensive TV speaker will find this Polk audio T15 suitable enough for your precious choice. It will add essence and a major improvement to their TV speakers.

Once, I watched a movie using this Polk audio T15 speaker, it felt amazing. You can imagine the thrill now.

How it could have been, all those horror scenes with the mind baffling sounds in the background diffusing throughout the whole room. I could say, I couldn’t sleep that night.

Again, they exhibit an exceptional dynamic range for their price and size.

Conclusion

Overall, I was very much impressed by these speakers, the T15s from Polk are very good bookshelf speakers, and especially for the price point of only about $70 for a pair that’s hard to be. The summary of the Polk audio t15 review goes here;It has passed all the tests from listening to the build quality. They can effortlessly fit in any living space. Comparison

Sound

As always, the sound is where it’s really at. No amount of make-up can make poor-sounding speakers good, but simple and basic solutions can still be excellent just by the merit of their sound quality. So how does the T15 stack up?

In all honesty, it sounds better than it should.

The overall sound is very warm, but while we could say that it lacks some detail, this wasn’t too surprising. You can’t get everything for this price, but the T15 still has a lot to offer. The imaging is really good, and it boasts an expansive and enveloping soundstage that work just as well with live performances as it does with studio recordings.

Plus, they can be impressively loud for their size, and with minimal distortion too.

As for the frequencies, we very much like how the T15 handles the bass. These are definitely bass-heavy speakers, and even without a subwoofer, they’ve got some genuine power behind them; way more power than you’d expect from speakers of this size. The dynamic range is also just unbelievable on the low end, even without a subwoofer.

The sub-bass is a bit weak, but still, we don’t think even bass heads will be left wanting with what the T15 has to offer on its own. And of course, pairing it up with a subwoofer can’t hurt.

The mids are also pretty good. Voices aren’t really the T15’s forte, but they at the very least average for the price. You won’t ever find them lacking in multimedia, but it’s fair to say you’ll get a bit more out of the T15 if the music you listen to isn’t vocal-heavy. To clarify, the mids aren’t at all bad or neglected; they just aren’t above what you’d expect for the price like the bass is.

If there’s any frequency that can come across as somewhat neglected, at least at first glance, then that’s got to be the high treble, as it is a bit receded. It’s not bad per se, but it does very much take a back seat while the other frequencies drive in the front. Depending on what type of music you listen to, this can even be a good thing, since the treble does tend to get artificially boosted in recordings nowadays.

If you’re not a fan of shrilling highs, you won’t mind this, but even if you are, it’s not pronounced to the point where it should make-or-break your decision to buy these speakers; especially since you can use an amp to add a level of detail to the highs very easily.

Design and Build Quality

The T15s are about as simple as they come in terms of looks. The all-black cabinet features a removable cloth grille, revealing a slightly grey woofer on the inside. The back of the cabinet features speaker inputs and a wall mount, but that’s it. The design is straightforward, not meddling in any trends imposed by the audio industry.

The cabinet is made out of MDF and comes in just over eight pounds. The dimensions measure 7.2 x 6.5 x 10.6 inches, making even the size as timeless as the design. The look maybe a little boring, but these are budget speakers. It’s nice to see Polk put the money into the components and not into the flair.

There are three components driving the speakers. The first is a 5.25” polymer composite cone driver that takes care of the midrange. This is the area that’s finished in grey with a nice black accent on the nipple of the cone.

Next comes the .75” soft silk dome tweeter. Honestly, this isn’t anything surprising. The tweeter is recessed, making a pseudo waveguide for the speaker. While this adds some protection, it would’ve been nice to see some sort of metal bracing so the dome tweeter doesn’t get pushed in.

Lastly, there’s a front port sitting in between the two drivers. I like front-ported designs, and I’m glad Polk opted for one here over a rear port.

The look of the T15s may not offer much, but they really don’t need to. Polk kept it simple, and, at this price, that’s a good thing.

Why Only Polka Audio?

Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

Like every other individual, you might also be looking for quality-based products.

The very motto of this Polka audio says itself: “Why anything else? We’ve always made the best speakers at the best price”

Let me take you in a flashback story of these speakers.

On a chilly winter night, a group of friends, engineers, and music lovers got up together with an ambition to establish an affordable speaker.

It didn’t take much time to establish a company with such a clear and down-to-earth vision towards the customer.

This is how the Polka audio bookshelf speakers came into play.

At the price, these speakers are really difficult to beat. For $99, the build quality and sound are more than enough to justify the price. For some extra speakers in a surround sound setup, these are great, giving some clear dialogue and crisp highs.

However, if you’re just starting your setup, these aren’t the best speakers to go with. While they’re inexpensive, they don’t provide enough in frequency to really satisfy your needs. If you’re starting, look into some floor-standing speakers or a soundbar.

Key Features of the T15

Keeping with the build, the feature set on the T15s is pretty barren. These speakers feature little else outside of actually producing sound. However, they do have a few features that help produce sound well.

The first is Polk’s Dynamic Balance technology (dynamic range). This tech improves the crossover areas of the speakers, giving you a wider sweet spot and more accurate sound. While most speakers have some sort of tech like this, it’s nice to see a premium feature at such a low price point.

Next is the front-ported design of the speaker. Many low-cost speakers have a rear-ported design that becomes problematic when pushed up against a wall. Polk seems to have thought this through, giving you both a wall hook in the back and front port to ensure that the bass reflex never loses its punch.

Outside of that, there’s really not much else. These speakers are straightforward, and they should be at the price. While it would be nice to see more features in them, I can’t complain considering the value they offer for premium listening at an affordable price.

Features

Certainly more impressive than opting for a nice wood-grain texture is the fact that the Polk Audio T15 packs some rather remarkable hardware for its price! This is what truly separates it from the rest of the riffraff that you can find at this price range. Instead of including only the bare minimum, the folk at Polk went the extra mile to ensure the T15 is a genuinely impressive affordable offering.

And given how it’s withstood the test of time, we’d say this effort hasn’t gone unappreciated.

As for the drivers, you have one 0.75″ silk/polymer composite dome Tweeter and one 5.25″ mineral-filled polymer composite cone Woofer. What’s more, these are both Dynamic Balance drivers, using proprietary technology that isn’t always featured in models this affordable, and both speakers are sonically matched for the best performance.

Granted, the smaller than average tweeter dome will decrease some of the dynamic range, but it will increase the dispersion, so pros and cons.

In addition to this, you also get the benefit of . What this means is that you won’t have to suffer any signal interferences from cables or nearby devices when using the T15. You can comfortably charge your smartphone right next to the speaker, even receive calls and messages, and the T15 will ignore it like it’s that last week’s pile of garbage that you forgot to take out.

As a final note, we have to say how much we appreciate the bass port being on the front. People like to make a bigger deal out of where the port is placed than it warrants; this is largely an aesthetics thing. But in this case, having the port in the front enables the amazing benefit of the speaker being physically capable of accommodating a screw slot on the back for wall mounting, which is always a perk.

Couple this with the compact size of the T15 and you’ve got yourself a pair of speakers that you can fit literary wherever you see fit. They work well on shelves, desktops, walls, you name it. What’s more, they even come with adhesive rubber pads that you can stick to whichever side of the speaker you decide is the bottom.

Polk Audio T15

The Polk Audio T15 bookshelf speakers belong to a more affordable price category, which doesn’t really compromise their quality and performance. Each speaker measures 10 inches in height and delivers a very nice stereo sound.

Featuring wide dispersion drivers and Dynamic Balance tweeters, the T15 by Polk are sonically matched with each other and work together in a synergistic way, allowing for a balanced crossover sounding.

This black pair would look nice on the wall. It allows for an easy wall mount in almost any part of your home thanks to keyhole slots.

Who It’s For

The Polk Audio specs make this pair of black bookshelf speakers an ideal option for a small living space and casual use. Place them near your computer or mount them on the wall next to your TV set, and such a setup will be enough for a medium room or a small apartment.

The T15 perform better at medium volumes, so they are also great for people who don’t need the sound to be exceedingly loud.

Pros

These little black crossover T15 speakers by Polk offer an amazing value for money. I mean, you’ve seen how much they cost, right? Well, being such an affordable model, they show a rather good performance and allow for a versatile connectivity.

The T15 also look very sleek with that black vinyl exterior styled like wood. They fit perfectly into my interior, looking quite elegant and not too flashy. They’re also rather lightweight and can be easily mounted on the wall, which will save you some space.

Now, performance-wise, this model might surprise you. Yes, the sound isn’t flawless, but it’s more than decent for such a price. The bass is powerful and distinct, and the mids are very smooth and clear. These stereo speakers can be used on their own for casual listening or as a part of a more complex sound system (as a supplementary equipment).

Cons

The first downside you need to know is that these stereo speakers don’t perform exceedingly well at low and high volumes. Some customer reviews prove that while being great for the midrange, these speakers lack some clarity when used for quiet melodies or loud sounds. You might hear some distortion, and the sound overall may seem a bit imbalanced.

Another thing I want to note in my Polk T15 review is the bass quality. It is very distinct and strong, which sometimes is not a good thing. Depending on the music you’re listening to, the bass might overpower the rest of the sounds, making the overall sounding more explosive and boomy.

Also, even though the specs seem good enough to use these speakers on their own, I would suggest pairing them up with a subwoofer for the sound clarity.

The Verdict

To be honest, when I saw the price, I didn’t expect too much from these bookshelf speakers. However, I can now surely say that the Polk Audio T15 is an excellent entry-level model best suitable for small living spaces and occasional listening.
